On December 16 2014 armed militants attacked a school in Peshawar, Pakistan killing 141 people, 132 of them children between the ages of 8 and 18. We are heartbroken about the innocent lives that were lost in this horrific act of violence and our prayers go out to the families of the victims and the citizens of Pakistan.

Many of us are searching for a way to help, either directly or in solidarity with the victims. Baby Hero has compiled a list of respected international charities operating in the region for those who are moved to make a donation. We think of contributions in two ways:

  1. Emergency relief that is necessary in the case of violent conflict or natural disaster, and
  2. Donations to bolster the community through longer-term impact, such as education or healthcare infrastructure.

Both types of contributions are needed in Pakistan. This is by no means an exhaustive list, there are many fine organizations working in the area to make a positive impact.

Education Focused

Developments in Literacy (DIL)

DIL is a US based charity that has carried charity navigator's highest 4 star rating for the past 4 years, ranking it in the top 6% of US charities. It operates 120 schools with a collective 19,000 students in Pakistan, focusing on rural and impoverished areas and especially on the primary education of girls which comprise almost 70% of its students.

The Citizens Foundation (TCF)

TCF is a highly effective charity operating 1,000 schools in Pakistan educating 145,000 students. With a focus on both urban slums and rural areas it has extensive reach and impact.

CARE Pakistan

CARE is one of the most established education NGOs in Pakistan, currently providing a free education to 175,000 students in 250 schools in Pakistan. The organization works with the Pakistan government to improve failing public schools, significantly improving the otherwise abysmal graduation rates and providing career and higher education counseling to its graduates.

Child Focused

Save the Children

Save the Children has been working in Pakistan for over 30 years, especially focused in North West Pakistan near Peshawar. Their services are too extensive to mention but they are a lifeline especially for children in conflict zones.

Emergency Relief

International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The IRC which is dedicated to providing relief in humanitarian disasters has also been working in Pakistan for decades. It has done everything from building schools and hospitals in Pakistan to improving sanitation and creating jobs.
